Women and children fishing near Ambatozavavy
The Lokobe Strict Nature Reserve is a protected natural area in north-western Madagascar, located on the island of Nosy Be. Lokobe is the last protected primary forest on this island and hosts numerous varieties of endemic medicinal plants and millenary trees. The Sambirano forest is the refuge of endemic species such as the black lemur and many species of palms, as well as chameleons, boas, and a true multitude of plant species. The reserve can be reached by sea from Ambatozavavy in about twenty minutes or by land, from the road starting in Hell-Ville, in approximately an hour. We will reach it by sea aboard a pirogue.
Travel plan:
Around 08:20, a minibus or jeep will pick you up from your resort, or any lodge if not a B&B, and take you to the lively village of Ambatozavavy. From there, we will board a rowing pirogue, and by rowing, we will reach the fishing village of Ampasipohy in about forty-five minutes. If you choose to row, it will certainly be tiring, but at the same time very spectacular and interesting. Upon arrival at Ampasipohy, you will meet a specialized guide and begin walking along the paths that lead into the forest.
