View from the island of Tsara Banjina
Tsara Banjina is one of the two inhabited islands of the Mitsio archipelago, and its name means "beautiful to see" in Malagasy. It is located in the Mozambique Channel, between the African continent and Madagascar, an hour's sail from the island of Nosy Be. In this stretch of sea, from September through November, you may encounter whales, whale sharks, and dolphins following the migrations of sardine schools and the plankton cycle. Nosy Mitsio is the largest island in the small archipelago, with a population dedicated to fishing and rice cultivation. Animist since time immemorial, the community of Nosy Mitsio has developed a wonderful ability for
social coexistence, sharing work, harvests from the land, and gifts from the sea. A peaceful life marked by the sun, the stars, and the traditional rituals guided by the shaman: the one who knows and communicates with the ancestors.
The pearl of the Mitsio islands is Tsarabanjina, with its two long beaches – the North and the South – of coral sand, framing a sea whose colors shift from cobalt blue to lapis lazuli azure and emerald green. In front of the North Beach, the sea is dominated by the imposing rock formations known as the Four Brothers. These basalt and molten iron pillars rise sharply toward the sky and plunge steeply into the sea, providing nesting grounds for seabirds and sea eagles.
The seabed offers a unique spectacle of marine flora and fauna.

Tsara Banjina is an island to explore both above and below the water. A simple walk around the island reveals breathtaking views. Every season offers unique experiences: from turtles climbing the beaches to lay their eggs (October to May) to the hatching and journey of the hatchlings to the sea. From sunsets to the night sky featuring the Southern Cross, and in December, the spectacular blooming of the flamboyant trees.
Departure time will be at 08:00, with a return from the island around 14:30, ensuring arrival back before dinner. A minibus or jeep will pick you up directly from your accommodation and take you to Ambatoloaka, the departure point for a fast speedboat ride that,
bouncing over the waves toward the northeast, will reach Nosy Tsara Banjina in about an hour.
This island is truly stunning, with red, gray, and black volcanic rocks rising slightly at its center, covered by lush vegetation featuring baobabs, large "pachypodium" trees, and small rocky plants. However, the island's greatest spectacle is its coarse white sandy beaches, where the waves of the crystal-clear indigo-blue sea gently fade, and where stingrays often delight in gliding gracefully.
